Music, Faith & Service
In this 2-hour-40-minute conversation, Brooks goes deep on growing up in Texas, losing his father at nine, teaching himself guitar at 20, and the business-minded grit that kept him working as a full-time musician for fifty years without a day job. He talks about 28 years performing at Cheeseburger in Paradise on Front Street Lahaina, the 2023 fires that ended that chapter, and the Nashville recordings that define his catalog.
At the center of the episode is a story Brooks rarely tells in full — a 1984 near-death experience on the 610 loop in Houston, where a drunk driver struck him at highway speed, severing his left leg. A stranger knelt down beside him and prayed. The bleeding stopped. His surgeon later whispered to him: "You're being healed" — and warned him never to repeat it. A year to the day after the accident, Brooks ran a mile — thirty seconds slower than he ran before it happened.
The episode closes with a live performance of Brooks' original song "The Road I Never Chose." Now streaming on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
